Assourdissant: Describes loud noises that render one deaf or fatigued, ie deafening.  In this case, it’s used figuratively (deafening silence).

As seen in: « Le silence des dirigeants israéliens était assourdissant, jeudi matin, alors que les plus grands journaux du pays titraient sur les informations, en provenance de l’étranger, faisant état d’une frappe aérienne israélienne, mardi soir, en territoire syrien. »

Riposte: A rapid response or counterattack.  This term is commonly used in fencing.
