Does this mean you’ll need to show ID to purchase candy?

QMI is reporting that a commentary published in medical journal Nature has concluded that sugar should be taxed and regulated like cigarettes and alcohol.  Among their suggestions:

  • limiting how many fast-food restaurants can exist in low-income neighbourhoods
  • putting an age restriction on the sale of sugary drinks and foods
  • increasing taxes on sweet stuff
  • tightening licensing requirements on vending machines and snack bars that sell sugary products in schools and workplaces

So yes, it looks like you’d hafta show ID to buy that chocolate bar, though there’s no word on what the minimum age for candy consumption would be.  On that note, there’s also no word as to whether anyone will take this study seriously, although rumour has it they’ve already started working on a sugar tax in Quebec… ;)
