Well, it seems my alma matter made the national news today, as a former student is taking Ryerson to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, arguing that her studies in social work were sabotaged by professors discriminating against her “creed” of ethical veganism. Frankly, I don’t see a connection between veganism and social work, and her faculty saying that she can’t write a thesis on animal rights for a Masters degree in Social Work hardly seems unreasonable to me.
There’s also the suggestion that comparing marginalized people to animals is, y’know, kinda racist, but as the complainant points out: “How am I being racist if ‘race’ is a part of my identity?”
(Good question. Why don’t you ask Latino hockey player Raffi Torres…)
As you may imagine, this story has sparked a 300+ comment debate on the National Post, with some wondering what other beliefs fall under this particular creed…
Apparently, it appears that the Rhino Party is pro-cannibalism. They are so not getting my vote in the next election!
