Time to sound the death knell on the Flames’ playoff chances….

As I type this, the Calgary Flames sit three points out of the playoffs with six games remaining.  Mathematically, they’ve still got a reasonable chance–although their chances are diminished once you consider that there are currently three teams with 86 points to Calgary’s 83, and only one of them is holding down a playoff spot at the moment.  Realistically speaking, it’s only the seventh and eighth spots that are up for grabs–with the third seed, going to the Pacific Division winners, also to be decided.  Too bad Calgary isn’t in the Pacific Division…

Last season, the Flames started off slow, made a big run around Christmas time, and cruised through the back half of the schedule, only to end up three points shy of the playoffs.  The problem last year was that Calgary had fewer games on its schedule down the stretch than the teams it was competing with, and wasn’t able to pick up enough points to seal the deal.  But that’s not the case this year, what with the Flames playing a whopping 17 games in March.  They’ve had plenty of opportunities to gain ground on idle opponents, but they just haven’t been doing it.

Mind you, there was an impressive 10-day stretch earlier this month in which the Flames scored three, four and even five goals in wins over Montreal, Winnipeg, Minnesota, San Jose and Phoenix.  They weren’t playing all that great defensively, but they were putting plenty of pucks in the net at a crucial stretch of the playoff race.  Things were looking pretty good for Calgary on March 16th, when two things happened.  First, they lost to the Oilers.  Then they sent down Sven Baertschi.

Granted, they were playing Edmonton on the second game of a back-to-back, having beaten Phoenix 4-1 the night before, but even with less than a full day’s rest and their backup goalie in net, a playoff team should still be able to beat the second-worst team in the Western Conference–especially when it’s Edmonton.  This loss set off a string of shootout setbacks against last-place Columbus and 13th-place Minnesota, with another shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche, currently in 10th, sandwiched in between.  And it wasn’t just that Calgary lost to these non-playoff teams, but how they lost: their inability to beat Blue Jackets backup Steve Mason and blowing a 2-0 lead to the Wild are not signs of a playoff contender.  The Flames’ current losing streak culminated with a 4-1 setback in Dallas yesterday, where they gave up a pair of early goals, then failed to put the puck past Kari Lehtonen for the better part of two periods before giving up a late cheapie to abandon all hope.  And that’s when I knew this team wouldn’t be participating in the playoffs.

Don’t get me wrong, Calgary has a key stretch of games this week against playoff contenders Dallas, L.A. and Colorado, with a day’s rest in between each of them–but unless they go three-for-three here, they can kiss the postseason goodbye.  While there’s no shame in losing to good teams, those bad losses to Edmonton, Columbus and Minnesota will kill their season.  Do I think the Flames can score enough goals against three stingy squads to pick up those six points–without going to a single shootout?  Not bloody likely.  And besides, we’ve all seen how the Flames fare in shootouts…  Not a winning proposition, that’s for sure.

You know who could probably score a few shootout goals for Calgary?  Sven Baertschi, the first Flames first-rounder worth getting excited about since Dion Phaneuf.  In his first five games with the big club, the kid netted three goals, displaying the kind of agility and finesse that are in short supply on this team of good ol’ prairie boys.  We could really use him at a time like this, but since he’s still in juniors, he can only be called up in case of an emergency, and our forwards are all healthy right now.  Hell, I’d personally break Matt Stajan’s kneecaps if it meant getting a goalscorer back in the lineup–as long as the team plays for my plane ticket.  I’m sure not dropping 500 bucks for this franchise!

Go Flames Go, I guess…

Predicting the Flames’ 7(!) nationally televised games this month…

Well, I guess the TV execs at CBC and TSN were paying attention when the Flames made their big post-Christmas run last year that kept them in playoff contention till the last week of the season, ultimately coming a couple points short.  Though they didn’t broadcast too many early-season contests, the two national networks are showing seven of the Flames’ 12 games in February–and that doesn’t include their Valentines Day Massacre of the Leafs, which I’ll be happy to watch on Sportsnet.  Their timing couldn’t be better, either, seeing as First Row Sports just got seized by the Department of Homeland Security…

Last month, when Calgary made three appearances on Hockey Night in Canada, I decided to predict the outcomes, just for the metal health of it.  Turns out, I ended up pretty close to the actual scores.  I had the Flames beating the Oilers 5-2, which ended up being a 6-2 win, and losing to the Kings 4-0 (final score 4-1 LA).  And though I had em pegged to lose to the Wild 3-1 back on January 7th, they actually beat Minnesota–by a 3-1 score.  So I figured I’m not too bad at this.  I guess I could either drop some money on Sports Select, or post my picks for this month’s playoff run, starting tonite against the Hawks.  Personally, I think they need at least nine of these nationally-televised 14 points to stay in the hunt, sitting five points back of Minny for eighth.  Time to take a look at how it should play out:

Chicago @ Calgary, February 3rd: The Flames haven’t fared so well in Chicago, losing 4-1 back in November and 4-2 a week before Christmas.  They did, however, pull off a 5-2 win over the Hawks on home ice in November.  Good thing these teams aren’t in Chicago tonite–Disney on Ice is, forcing the Hawks to take a nine-day road trip.  Did I mention that they played–and lost–last nite in Deadmonton, giving up eight goals(!?) in the process?  Thanks for softening ‘em up, Losers… Flames 4, Hawks 2

UPDATE 11:37 PM: Well, I was right on the margin, just a bit off on the final tally.  Flames take this one 3-1, a solid start to the month!

Calgary @ San Jose, February 8th: This is bound to be a tough one, as the team travels to the Shark Tank to take on the top squad in the Pacific Division.  Mind you, their last trip to San Jose ended in a shootout loss, with the Sharks also scoring a 1-0 regulation win in Cowtown a couple weeks back.  Thus, I think we can expect this to be a low-scoring affair–in fact, I’m predicting a whitewash after 60 minutes.  The Flames lose in the shootout, but pick up a valuable point on the road. Sharks 1, Flames 0 (SO)

UPDATE 2/9: Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong about that one.  Jokinen comes alive and Kipper wins his 300th as the Flames take a big two points on the road by a 4-3 tally!

Vancouver @ Calgary, February 11th: Though I do think Calgary could be a playoff team this year, it pains me to admit that they’re not in Vancouver’s league.  And while it doesn’t help that we normally face the Nucks on the second day of a back-to-back, the first two contests weren’t even close–mind you, Calgary did get an early Christmas present with a 3-1 win on December 23rd.  Let’s just say that if these two teams meet in the playoffs, it won’t be a long series. Canucks 4, Flames 1

UPDATE 2/12: Make that the second time I call for a Flames loss and they win, this time in a shootout by a 3-2 margin.  I suppose this bodes well for the Philly game in two weeks’ time…

Calgary @ Dallas, February 16th: The Stars currently sit in ninth place, two points ahead of Calgary.  This is the kind of game we need to win if we wanna make it to the dance.  It’s also the first meeting between the two teams this season, and I don’t think I’ve seen Dallas play, period, so I don’t have a whole lot to go by.  It is worth pointing out, however, that while Dallas has three more wins in regulation, Calgary’s picked up an additional four points in extra time.  If this game goes into OT, I gotta give the Flames the edge. Flames 3, Stars 2 (OT)

UPDATE 2/16: Right score, but I got the two teams backwards.  The Stars just beat the Flames 3-2 in OT.  Calgary’s still on pace for the 10 points, though…

Calgary @ Los Angeles, February 18th: Though I accurately predicted that Darryl Sutter’s homecoming would spoil Mike Cammalleri’s return to the Calgary lineup last month, the Flames avenged that drubbing with a shootout win in L.A. five days later.  My sources tell me that this game will also be played in Los Angeles.  Flames 2, Kings 1 (SO)

UPDATE 2/19: Kipper stands on his hand, Flames win all the big faceoffs late, and Cammalleri scores to squeak out a 1-0 win, moving the team into eighth place for the first time all season!  What a big two points!

Philadelphia @ Calgary, February 25th: This is the only meeting of the season between the Flames and the Flyers, who currently sit fourth in the Eastern Conference with 66 points.  Philly looks pretty good coming into town, with a stellar 18-7-2 road record and a +22 goal differential (the Flames are -19).  Suffice to say that this should be a tough test.  Do I think the 10 pm start time could throw em off?  Maybe just a little bit.  But the Flyers clearly have more firepower, and I see them taking this one.  Flyers 3, Flames 2

UPDATE 2/26: Well, the Flames got a point, but that didn’t stop them from falling to 11th place as Philly wins 5-4 in a shootout.  That shit ain’t cool!

St. Louis @ Calgary, February 27th: Though the Flames have owned the Blues these past few seasons, St. Louis has really turned the tide this year.  They took the second game of the season 5-2, then followed it up with a 2-0 shutout win in November.  Mind you, both of those games were on the road.  When the two teams faced off at the Saddledome, the Flames won, 3-1.  I think we’ll see the home ice advantage continue in this season series. Flames 2, Blues 1

By my count, that’s nine of a possible 14 points, right there.  Unfortunately, only two Flames games in March/April will be televised nationally, so I sure hope some of these streaming sites have found new domains by then.  Otherwise, I just might hafta order a one-month subscription to NHL Centre Ice, especially if they’re still in the hunt…

Okay, you didn’t think I’d go without mentioning the Flames-Leafs game, did you?  I know from first-hand experience that the Flames don’t always fare well in Toronto, having attended a few of those games, including the 3-2 loss in October.  However, I also know that the Leafs tend to blow in Cowtown, as evidenced by their 5-2 loss there last season, after which the Flames also won in a shootout at the ACC.  That game was a lotta fun, heh heh…  Alas, I foresee another lopsided loss for the Buds in this one.  Flames 4, Leafs 1, bitches!
