FRENCH WORD OF THE DAY: Hypothéquer

Hypothéquer: Literally, to mortgage.  (A mortgage is une hypothèque in French).  Can also be used figuratively in the sense of to compromise or to endanger someone/something.

As seen in: « La qualité de l’air qu’on retrouve dans les écoles primaires laisse à désirer, ce qui peut hypothéquer la santé des enfants, déplore le vérificateur général du Québec dans son rapport annuel déposé jeudi à l’Assemblée nationale. »

(Translation: “The air quality found in elementary schools leaves much to be desired, and could endanger the health of children, deplores the Auditor General of Québec in his annual report delivered Thursday to the National Assembly.”)

FRENCH WORD OF THE DAY: Perchoir

Perchoir: A perch, literally for birds.  Figuratively refers to a high-up place, either in terms of elevation or of importance, ie the president of the National Assembly.

As seen in: « Le “perchoir” pourrait donner lieu à un match des plus ouverts, avec Claude Bartolone ou Elisabeth Guigou dans les premiers rôles. »

(Translation: “The race for the ‘perch’ could be wide open, with Claude Bartolone or Elisabeth Guigou leading the way.”)

FRENCH WORD OF THE DAY: Fracturation hydraulique

Fracturation hydraulique: To fracture a layer of rock with a pressurized liquid.  Known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking in English.

As seen in: « L’Assemblée nationale du Québec sera appelée à voter demain sur une motion du Parti Québécois qui pourrait enfin instituer un moratoire complet sur l’exploration, la fracturation hydraulique et l’exploitation des gaz de schiste. »

(Translation: “The National Assembly of Quebec will be called to vote tomorrow on a Parti Québécois motion that could finally institute a full moratorium on the exploration, hydraulic fracturing and exploitation of fossil fuels.”)
