While it’s known for the Colts, country bumpkins and anti-depressants, the state capital of Indiana is also home to a decent handful of heavy bands who’ve taken the torch from TGOS and are cranking out some quality sludge/doom. Stick around as I count ‘em down over the next five days…
2. Apostle of Solitude

I still have fond memories of the first (and to date only) time I saw these guys live. Incidentally, it would be three years ago to the day next weekend. Just got off a bus in Rochester after a looooong delay at the border, walked over to The Bug Jar, grabbed a burger (John Gallo’s legendary DoomBQ) and a beer, then stood in awe as AOS melted my face off. I liked ‘em so much I bought a shirt. Anyways, while 2008′s Sincerest Misery was a pretty solid sludgy doom debut, they really took it up to the next level with sophomore effort Last Sunrise, a haunting, melodic, epic doom album that more than makes up for its dodgy cover art. Check out this live rendition of the downright depressing (in a good way?) “December Drives Me to Tears.”
Aaaaand, here’s a couple pics I took of ‘em at the Born II Late doomfest in 2009:
