The third annual Days of the Doomed fest starts Friday in wonderful Cudahy, Wisconsin.  Hey, it’s close to the Milwaukee airport, so that works for me.  And for the first time, yours truly will be in attendance.  For the rest of the week, I’ll be giving you six reasons why I chose to make the trip.  (Hint: I’m talking about bands on the bill.)  You can’t buy a ticket online anymore, but maybe if you’re in the area, you can show up at the door and they’ll let you in?  I dunno…

Having seen Victor Griffin with Pentagram a couple years back (which was, incidentally, one of the very first posts on this blog), I no longer have any reason to see Pentagram again.  After yet another falling-on with Bobby Liebling, the iconic axeman has assembled a new outfit with the likes of Jeff Olson (ex-Trouble), Guy Pinhas (Goatsnake, The Obsessed) and “Minnesota” Pete Campbell (most notably of Sixty Watt Shaman).  Holy Supergroup of Doom, Batman!  Alas, I haven’t yet heard the band’s debut, but I’m looking forward to listening to it live.  In the meantime, check out this clip of them performing “Digital Critic” (heh heh) at Roadburn 2013:

Twas a day of celebration at the Toronto Sun as Bob “What a Boob” Rae announced his resignation from politics.  Amongst much rejoicing and drooling of drivel, one commenter related a story of a man so enRaeged by Rae Days that he fled to the West Coast to become a forest ranger:

Though I’ve seen ‘em a handful of times–in three different cities (Cleveland, Seattle and Toronto; Milwaukee will be the fourth), TGOS is one of those bands of whom I never tire.  This Indy trio started that whole Circle of True Doom club, and it’s an apt descriptor of their sound: this is what doom is supposed to sound like.  Check out the eerie video for their tune “Death March” from their new free (that’s right, FREE!) Stormcrow EP, available from Scion AV.

Don’t ask me why, but nearly 40 years after the ex-union boss disappeared, the FBI is digging up a field outside of Detroit in search of Jimmy Hoffa’s remains.  Apparently, they’re acting on a hot tip from a former Detroit mob boss—who happened to be in prison at the time.  But hey, I’m sure he knows a guy who knows a guy that did it, right?

On the other hand, maybe some mobster just needs a hole dug for his new pool?

(Methinks that might only work in Michigan, mind you…)

In other bone-headed news, CTV is reporting that a recent study has revealed that heading soccer balls can cause brain injury.  Gee, it wouldn’t take Albert Einstein to figure that out, would it?  Well actually, as per CTV, “Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York recently completed a study in which they used MRI to take images of the brains of 37 amateur adult soccer players who had played the sport since childhood.”  And here, I didn’t even know Einstein was a doctor.

All I can say is that if Nigel Wright can’t remember where he put that $90K cheque because of an old soccer injury, well…  WHY HAVEN’T WE ABOLISHED THE SENATE ALREADY!!!???

Y’know, I figured the first-ever fiddle-doom band would be from Newfoundland.  Surely Sheavy knows someone who plays a mean bow, eh?  But as it turns out, Chicago’s Earthen Grave (feat. Ron Holzner, ex-Trouble and Lair of the Minotaur’s Chris Wozniak) enlisted classically-trained violinist Rachael Barton Pine on the Viper, a hybrid electric fiddle (leather pants not included), to claim the title.  And while they’ve got no ties to the Great White North, they’re one of the few bands on the bill that’s actually been to Canada.  Last summer, they played a majestic cathedral in the nation’s capital for the Music & Beyond Festival.  I wasn’t there, but here’s some pictures:

Judging by the reactions on the Internet–in both official languages–it would appear that if Woodstock was held along the Ontario/Quebec border, it would’ve been the worst thing ever.  Or so it seems, according to attendees of last weekend’s Amnesia RockFest in Montebello, PQ.  People complained of long lineups, shitty shuttle service, and bands getting bumped from the bill so Marilyn Manson could set up.  OK, so the latter does suck.  But worst of all was a proverbial ocean of pee that flowed freely across the concert site.  Johnny H. Rotten, don’ they know that standing in puddles of piss is pure punk rock!?

Then again, I’m not so sure there wasn’t a large quantity of pre-teen vaginal secretions left at the site of the Much Music Video Awards last night.  I haven’t been down to Queen St. to check…
