It’s Taming of the Shrew meets Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? in Hong Kong, where real-estate mogul Cecil Chao Sze-tsung has offered up 500-million Hong Kong Dollars (roughly 65-million USD) to any man who manages to woo and wed his 33-year-old daughter. There is a catch, though: she’s already married—to another woman.
As the BBC reports, “Same-sex unions are not recognized in Hong Kong, although homosexuality was decriminalized in 1991.” As such, while Sze-tsung’s daughter Gigi Chao reportedly married Sean Eav, her girlfriend of seven years, in Paris this past April, her father refuses to recognize the union. “Mr Chao, who has never married himself, told the BBC his daughter was still single and needed a ‘good husband.’”
The Hong Kong businessman also sees his offer as a solid proposition for an up-and-coming entrepreneur. According to The Telegraph, Sze-tsung considers his daughter’s dowry “an inducement to attract someone who has the talent but not the capital to start his own business.” Oh, and he has to be a nice guy, too.
Gigi Chao, who reportedly runs a modeling talent management company in Hong Kong, hasn’t said what she thinks about her father putting her on the market—but she doesn’t seem to be accepting suitors on social media, mind you. “No longer accepting Facebook friend requests … sorry,” The Telegraph gleaned from her page. “Where do all these people come from? Jerusalm [sic]? Ethiopia? Istanbul? ridiculous. It’s also quite scarey [sic] that my friend requests number keeps jumping up every few seconds.”
Ironically, she actually praised her papa’s openness and non-intervention in an interview a few years ago. “My father took a hands-off approach in parenting,” she told HK Magazine. “I see him as a friend more than a father. My parents never pressure me with high expectations.”
But when it comes to high expectations, that 65-million-dollar man will be under quite a bit of pressure, I presume…
