Now that the world’s worst portrait artist has put her town on the map, she wants paid, according to Spanish newspaper El correo. As you may recall, Cecilia Giménez, the 80-year-old woman who took it upon herself to turn Elías García Martínez’s Ecce Homo into a very hairy monkey, made international headlines last month, getting press from such far-away places as Afghanistan, China, Japan and the Virgin Islands, El correo reports. Now, it seems that her church is charging tourists to see her art(less) work—and she’s looking for royalties.
Giménez, who’s reportedly afraid to show her face in public after the incident, claims that the church has made two-thousand Euros in just four days. But the Santuario de Misericordia counters that all they did was put out a tip jar—and if someone happens to slip a 50 in there, God bless them! In any case, the Giménez family has apparently hired a lawyer to make sure that her “author’s rights” are respected. Stay tuned…
In the meantime, there’s no question that La restauradora has brought a lot more business to Borja. Discount airline Ryanair is now selling tickets to Zaragoza, the nearest airport, for a mere 12 Euros to curious tourists, while La Fundación Sancti Spiritus, the organization that owns the church, is launching an international paint-your-owe-Ecce-Homo contest. Hmm, can entrants use Photoshop?
