Admittedly, I’ve never been to Philadelphia (though I’ve heard it’s n0t so nice), but I did have a Pittsburgh cheesesteak at Primanti’s a couple months back. It seems the two cities do things quite differently when it comes to the cheesesteak, however–judging by the sammies served up at I Went to Philly, a new eatery that opened on Yonge St over the weekend, just north of College.
Formerly home to Pasta Perfection, a decent little place that had its culinary concept aped by Pasta Pane Vino around the corner and up the way on Bay, the spot now hosts a restaurant that’s unique to this city–a joint that serves only cheesesteak! With its pictures of Philly institutions Pat’s and Gino’s on the wall, along with a prayer board and the 5 rules of ordering cheesesteak, including one that states, essentially, “Get your money ready!” (they accept cash only), it’s not exactly upscale–but not too chintzy, either. I did notice largely a business clientele like yours truly, who would probably get mugged dressed sensible casual on the streets of Philadelphia. But all kidding aside, this place is pretty sweet. Did I mention they have cheesesteak fries, too? Feast your eyes on this:
Although “The Works,” pictured at right, is topped with both Cheez Whiz and provolone–along with onions, green peppers and mushrooms–it’s the former that dominates the palette. If you’re the kind of person who considers the cheesy spread to be one of the five essential food groups, you’re gonna love this place! And no, that’s not a tomato, but rather a hot pepper that they give you to nibble on, for a little extra kick. I’m just thankful their service was pretty fast–I needed some time to walk this off before heading back to the office…
