This just in: Eating eggs can kill you—and we’re not just talking about the un-graded kind you buy at Chinese supermarkets in Scarborough, either. A recent study from the University of Western Ontario has found that eating egg yolks “accelerates atherosclerosis, an effect which is more often linked to smoking cigarettes,” according to British tabloid The Sun. For those not medically inclined, atherosclerosis is also known as coronary artery disease, and is caused by having high cholesterol. What smoking has to do with it is beyond me…
That said, Dr. David Spence of UWO surveyed 1,231 people at “vascular prevention clinics” within the province and concluded that eating eggs increased certain risk factors for heart attacks and strokes. “The study shows that, with age, plaque builds up gradually in the arteries and egg yolks make it build up faster,” Spence told The Sun, blaming it on the cholesterol. Good thing I don’t eat too many eggs, then. Cheeseburgers, well, that’s a different story…
