The Associated Press is reporting that Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou has been “expelled” from the Greek Olympic team due to racist tweets and retweets on her Twitter account. It seems that the young blonde athlete is a fervent supporter of the Golden Dawn Party, a once-fringe far-right entity that made it into parliament in the last Greek elections with roughly seven per cent of the vote, and gained recent notoriety when party spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris pimp-slapped a commie on national TV. After retweeting several posts from the man with the golden hand, and even wishing him “Many happy years, be always strong and true!!!” on his birthday, it was only when she decided to make an off-colour joke of her own that Papachristou really felt the sting of her country’s Olympic Committee.
“With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!” she said (in her native tongue) via the social networking site on Sunday, a reference to a recent West Nile outbreak in Athens. Though her Golden Dawn buddies musta been in stitches, it seems that the other 93 per cent of the country wasn’t laughing, with some even chastising her sponsors for supporting someone of her ilk. (Apparently, she was part of some national ad campaigns for the likes of Samsung…) And when the Democratic Left party, one of the members of Greece’s governing coalition, came out strongly against her remarks, well, that’s when the tzatziki hit the spanakopita.
No word as of yet to the length of her ban, but if the 23-year-old ever decides to take up opera, it’s safe to say that she probably won’t be welcome in Germany.
