While it’s known for the Colts, country bumpkins and anti-depressants, the state capital of Indiana is also home to a decent handful of heavy bands who’ve taken the torch from TGOS and are cranking out some quality sludge/doom. Stick around as I count ‘em down over the next five days…
4. Coffinworm
Also bursting out in 2010 with the release of their debut album, When All Became None, on Profound Lore Records, Coffinworm offers up a blacker kind of sludge, sort of along the lines of Howl, Indian and the first Sons of Tonatiuh record, albeit bleaker and more grim. Despite cheeky, almost laughable song titles such as “Strip Nude for Your Killer,” “Spitting in Infinity’s Asshole” and “The Sadistic Rites of Count Tabernacula,” there is nothing light-hearted or silly about this band, whose members choose to be known by one initial. (Ok, maybe that is kinda silly…) This year saw the reissue of their ’09 demo Great Bringer of Night on wax by Flenser Records, and they just put out a split with Cleveland sludgesters Fistula. They will surely rape all your aural orifices, ‘n all that shit.
