FRENCH WORD OF THE DAY: Tomber dans l’escarcelle

Tomber dans l’escarcelle: To belong to, to be possessed by, figuratively to fall into the hands or to be in the pocket of someone or something (an escarcelle is a medieval pouch).

(Translation: “Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki declared Wednesday in front of the French National Assembly that Tunisia hasn’t fallen into the hands of Islam, but is in the hands of democracy.”)
