FIVE OTHER BANDS FROM NC YOU SHOULD KNOW/CARE ABOUT – Antiseen

Raleigh’s native sons Corrosion of Conformity pretty much put North Carolina on the metal map with the release of Animosity back in ’85.  And while the state hasn’t sprung forth a well of heavy riffage like neighbouring Georgia and Virginia of late–to say nothing of the Florida death metal scene–there are at least a handful of bands from the Tarheel State that, well, if you like COC, you’d probably be into them too.  So cook up some grits and lace up those powder blue Air Jordans as I list ‘em off over the next few days.  (Oh, and COC are playing the Opera House on Thursday–but I’m sure you knew that already…)

Antiseen

It doesn’t get much more North Carolina than Antiseen.  The down-home, dirty punk ‘n roll outfit led by Mick Foley-lookalike Jeff Clayton has been kicking around since back in ’83.  They’re perhaps best known for collaborating with G.G. Allin on the 1991 album Murder Junkies, which produced such feel-good hits as “Rape, Torture, Terminate And Fuck,” “Kill The Police” and “I Hate People.”  But their own extensive discography has been marked by more light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek fare, with several musical tributes to professional wrasslers–including Cactus Jack himself.  Both 1991′s Southern Hostility and ’93′s Eat More Possum were remastered and reissued on a single CD by Man’s Ruin in 2000, with the latter giving us such catchy tunes as “I’ve Aged 20 Years in 5,” “Animals… Eat ‘em,” “Shittin’ in High Cotton” and “Trapped in Dixie,” along with the aforementioned nod to Cactus Jack.  Here’s their ode to anti-vegetarianism, shot at a gig in Denver last summer:
