I gotta say, I was intrigued by the headline on one of The Star’s featured stories today. You mean, they’re paying this kid to cut class? Well no, not exactly. Turns out that the kid in question has graduated from high school and was awarded a 100K Thiel Fellowship for working on an Open Source Ecology project in Missouri. One of the conditions of the fellowship is that he can’t use it towards schooling, which meant turning down an admissions offer from the U of T. So, by taking money to pursue a career path instead of a post-secondary education, isn’t that essentially stating that he’s entered the workforce? Or, in other words…
By employing The Star’s turn of phrase, you could say that I got (salary redacted) to not pursue a Master’s degree. Then again, how many people would click on a story with “Thiel Fellowship” and “Open Source Ecology” in the headline? Hey, I guess it sells papers (or banner ads, as the case may be)…
