The American Dream drug reference in Saint Vitus’ new album title…

Unless you listen to ABBA, you’re probably aware that Saint Vitus has a new album out, Lillie-F65, their first in 17 years.  It’s good stuff, right up there with anything they’ve done with Wino.  But what’s up with the album title?  Many reviews indicate that it’s a drug reference, without going into any specifics.  BWBK‘s Mark Gromen, for one, calls it “an old school depressant” which is at least somewhat accurate.  As for his review, well, only a power-metal fan would find Vitus at their best writing “catchy, upbeat material”–but I digress.  Stay slow, kids…

Alas, it seems Dave Chandler either couldn’t remember exactly what was written on those orange-and-blue pills he used to take in the 80s–or he purposely changed the album title to avoid any legal action from one of America’s largest pharmaceutical companies.  Y’see, Lilly (not Lillie) F65 was the inscription found on Tuinal, a barbiturate downer manufactured by Eli Lilly up until the 1980s.  Lilly also produced Seconal, which was marked Lilly F40 or F42–and is better known as the drug that allegedly killed Jimi Hendrix, Judy Garland and Tennessee Williams.  And while Seconal is still available in drugstores today, Lily has stopped making Tuinal “due to the diminishing use of barbiturates in outpatient treatment” as per Wikipedia.

Nowadays, Lilly and Company sees most of its revenue through boner-drug Cialis and anti-depressants like Prozac and Cymbalta.  But it was also the first company to market insulin, as well as methodone.  The 148th largest company in the U.S.A. began as a family business by Civil War veteran Eli Lilly in Indianapolis back in 1876–where it is still headquartered to this day.  As it turns out, Indianapolis is also home to Apostle of Solitude, The Gates of Slumber and a fledgling sludge/doom scene.  Coincidence?
